White spots are small opaque areas on the tooth enamel that indicate an incomplete mineralization of enamel prisms..

These can be of two types, intrinsic to the tooth or extrinsic. The latter are often caused by incorrect removal of bacterial plaque for prolonged periods of time.

There are several methods for dealing with white spots:

  • Microinjection Infiltration: The ICON (DMG) product is used to remove or mask white spot lesions. The infiltrating resin has a refractive index of light similar to that of a healthy enamel and allows to compensate for the difference in refraction of light. In this way, the appearance of the infiltrated lesion can be adapted to the surrounding enamel. After this type of treatment, bleaching is not recommended.

  • Whitening: in this case it is used to decrease the chromatic difference between the lesion and the rest of the tooth enamel.

  • Micro-abrasion: this technique uses controlled granulometry products to opaque the white lesion and make it more uniform with the healthy enamel.

  • Tooth Musse: casein-based products are applied with custom-made retainers, it is advisable to apply them at night. This remineralizing product is particularly effective in the treatment of demineralized white spots due to exogenous causes.

  • Fluorine: an oligo element that favors the remineralization of the tooth.

  • Fillings/Veneers: it is the most invasive solution, the lesion is removed and covered with filling material, this solution is recommended when white spots tend to become brown spots, for example, cases where previous treatments were not fully effective.
